Barenia is a rare, high-quality calf leather that’s been used by Hermès’ equestrian division for a long time, first appeared in the Hermès handbag collections in the 1970s.
Barenia is made from high-grade calf leather tanned in a labor-intensive process that takes up to six weeks. Barenia is a very delicate leather, which is prone to scratching. It is one of the softer leathers and bags made with this leather will lose shape after a while. It has a buttery smooth, matte finish
Barenia, also known as Novonappa, hails from Tanneries Haas located on the Rhine River plain in France. Still owned and run by the founding family, the sixth-generation tannery carries its extensive knowledge in calfskin processing through to its products. Having strong partnerships with high-end luxury fashion brands including Hermès, Chanel, and Bottega Veneta, Tanneries Haas also developed product-specific expertise, not least in the watch strap industry, where the Barenia and Zermatt articles are synonymous with beauty, comfort, and reliability.
The buttery-smooth calfskin has a mellow and plush feel, with just the right amount of rigidity and flex. Fine pores on its surface not only add to the leather's beautiful grain, but grant it the ability to catch the light at a range of angles. This results in a soft gloss which complements the mild patina that it develops with use and time.

We carefully searched and picked high-quality veg tanned genuine leathers from Italy as the raw material for our covers, Minerva Box Wax and Lux. We use the the ring mechanism from the Germany brand, Krause.
The genuine leather itself will have its own leather aroma, and will become more and more shiny and also patina with time. These signs and marks of use are reflecting the deep bonds between the owners and leather notebooks from the day and night uses, and they are the best gift left by the time.
The process is semi-handmade. We manually completed steps including leather selection, pattern setting, and leather cutting, with only the stitching is done by machine. Machine stitchings are more neat and even.
